Berlo's SMCR Communication Model

There are a great many communication models which can be studied. The model above was created by Berlo, and is an adaptation of an earlier communication model. The acronym SMCR is short for: S - Source, M - Message, C - Channel, R - Receiver ("Berlo's SMCR Model," 2010). The video on the sidebar may offer some additional assistance.

Source
All messages must originate somewhere, and the source is where they originate. Often, the source refers to the sender, or encoder, of the message.

Message
What is being communicated is the message.

Channel
The way in which a message is received is through a channel--hearing, seeing, touching, smelling, and tasting.

Receiver
The message is sent to the receiver, who is sometimes known as the decoder.
